after last night
Over the course of two days I listened to a particular song at least 20 times. It's called "After Last Night" by Anderson .Paak, Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, Thundercat, and Bootsy Collins (that's a lot of people), and I love it. My journey with this song is as follows:
1. I listen to this song for the first time, immediately drawn, as if a thought bubble with an exclamation mark appeared above my head.
2. I play it again once, twice, five times, and somehow each time the song sounds better than it did before. It makes sense because people tend to favor songs they have been previously exposed to.
3. I play it 20 times.
4. It hasn't happened yet and I dread the moment it does, but I am sure that at after n amount of replays, I will grow tired of the song and it will loose most of the charm it once had.
5. I find another song.
6. The entire cycle repeats.
Doesn't this process draw parallels with the concept of samsara? Throughout Siddartha's life, he is many things. A son, Samana, best friend, wandering man, lover, businessman, ferryman, and father. Many stages of life begin only to inevitably end.
Like how Siddartha grew tired of his role as a businessman and became a ferryman, people grow tired of the music they listen to and find new songs. The value we hold to different aspects of life unpredictably change, and that is natural.
For now, though, I'll keep listening to the song for as long as I can.
